Daily Discovery: Cometasur – Ciudad Fantasma

Colombian ensemble Cometasur releases “Ciudad Fantasma” (Ghost City), a spacious, slow-burning single featuring Argentine vocalist Karen Nerak, out 10 June via Péndulo Records. The track is the latest in the group’s ongoing exploration of Latin jazz, built on layered repetition, rich textures, and a deep grounding in Colombian musical tradition.

“Ciudad Fantasma” maps a deserted urban landscape through sparse jazz harmonies and Nerak’s clear, haunting delivery. Her lyrics paint a city emptied of life but full of memory. The mood is meditative but never static, driven by a subtle rhythmic core and shifting melodic lines.

Cometasur’s sound is distinct, anchored in tropical grooves and loop-based composition, but shaped by an ensemble approach that prioritises atmosphere over solos. Euphonium, tenor sax, piano, double bass, and drums weave in and out, occasionally joined by flute, clarinet, or synth. There’s an organic fluidity to the arrangement that reflects the band’s focus on collective improvisation.

“Ciudad Fantasma” builds a slow, deliberate atmosphere: loop-driven, spacious, and grounded in rhythm. Cometasur draws on Colombian groove and ambient jazz to create a sound that pulses without rushing. Karen Nerak anchors it with a vocal that’s calm but loaded, delivering each line with weight. The track captures that eerie feeling of walking through a place where life has paused. Still, but not empty. Quiet, but not silent.
