Oktoecho is a Montreal ensemble that fuses Indigenous, Middle Eastern, and contemporary styles like jazz, classical, and experimental music. Founded in 2001 by composer Katia Makdissi-Warren, the group which ranges from three to 30 musicians, explores connections between cultures, blending the depth of Inuit throat singing, the Quebecois folk repertoire, the rhythms of Arabic music, and the structure of Western classical and jazz.
Their cooperative artistic direction is inspired by Indigenous collective practices, fostering an environment of dialogue and mutual respect among their diverse musicians. Their latest single, “Hand Drum Song,” reflects this approach, combining Inuit drumming and throat singing with influences from various global traditions.
