Madra Salach‘s “The Man Who Seeks Pleasure (Live from London)” was recorded on the last night of the band’s sold-out debut headline tour, at The Dome in Tufnell Park in March, and arrived on Island Records on 26 June. The song first appeared on the Dublin band’s debut EP, It’s a Hell of an Age, released in January, which reached number three on the Irish Albums Chart, broke into the UK’s Official Independent Albums Chart top ten and earned the band live sessions for BBC 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq and Radio 1’s New Music Fix.

Paul Banks built the song around indulgence undercut by consequence, pleasure and pain framed as two names for the same want, setting the scene early with the image “lick the sugar off the cane.” The London version stretches that tension out with the full band: Jack Martin and Adam Cullen‘s guitar and mandolin lines wind around each other, Maxime Arnold‘s harmonium deepens the drone underneath, and Dara Duffy and Jack Lawlor push the song harder on drums and bass than the EP cut allows.

Banks has said the recording comes from “the last show on our debut headline tour,” and that the band wanted a version built around the full arrangement rather than the more minimal EP take. The band follow the release with a run of summer festival dates including Electric Picnic and Green Man, before returning to headline UK and Irish venues in October.
