Ginger Baker’s “N’Kon Kini N’Kon N’Kon,” originally released in 1977 on Eleven Sides of Baker, returns via Deep Jazz Vol. 4, the latest BBE Music compilation curated by Jean-Claude (If Music).
A hypnotic afrobeat gem, crafted with Fela Kuti’s Kalakuta Republic, blends Baker’s powerhouse drumming with pulsating West African rhythms, soaring horns, and deep grooves. It’s a standout from the only known line-up of Baker’s rotating ensemble, featuring Chris Spedding, Rick Grech, Alan Skidmore, and more.
The latest in BBE’s You Need This series, Deep Jazz Vol. 4 spotlights global rarities, spanning Japanese jazz fusion, Oakland funk, and Afrocentric grooves. Highlights include George Hirota’s vibraphone-driven landscapes and Phavia Kujichagulia’s Congolese-inspired rhythms, underscoring Baker’s cross-genre legacy.
Beyond Cream, Baker was an unrelenting musical explorer—immersing himself in African music, founding West Africa’s first modern recording studio, and collaborating with Fela Kuti, Paul McCartney, and avant-garde jazz pioneers. His insatiable curiosity shaped an enduring influence.
Available digitally and on double vinyl LP from the 28th of February, Deep Jazz Vol. 4 is now available for pre-order HERE
