Daily Discovery: Duo Ruut – Kuuse Koht

Duo Ruut return with “Kuuse Koht”, the second single from their upcoming album Ilmateade, due for release on the 12th of June. Formed by Estonian musicians Ann-Lisett Rebane and Katariina Kivi, the duo’s approach remains anchored in the interplay between two performers and one shared kannel, the traditional Estonian zither. The new track continues their signature blend of minimalism and rootedness, built from layered vocals, tightly coordinated phrasing, and rhythmic picking patterns that stretch and contract within a fixed frame.

Ilmateade was written over several years of touring and collaboration, often shaped by fleeting moments: a soundcheck at a small festival in Portugal, a melody started in a cabin by the sea, or a song written for friends’ wedding vows. The result, in the duo’s words, is something like a photo album: music that captures movement, weather, and memory across shifting landscapes.

The title, Ilmateade (“weather report”), began as a joke but gradually took on weight. Some tracks approach weather as metaphor; others take it more literally, in the spirit of everyday conversation. Not every track seeks to be profound—some simply observe what’s changing, quietly marking time. The album moves between introspection and directness, always staying close to Duo Ruut’s core idea: that meaningful music can come from a stripped-down setup and a shared musical language.

The album features collaborations with musicians the duo have long admired, and was recorded with producer José Diogo Neves, whose sharp ear and light touch helped bring the project into focus.
