Daily Discovery: Toné Vicioso & Aumbata – Yabaliné (En Vivo)

“Yabaliné” came alive on the 27th September in a live performance at the Centro Cultural de España in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. This rendition of the piece honoured traditional Dominican music while incorporating elements of improvisation and a fresh interpretation. Featuring chants from the Cofradía del Espíritu Santo de los Congos de Villa Mella, the performance celebrated one of the country’s most treasured musical traditions.

Aumbatá, a dynamic group known for its fusion of Dominican roots music with jazz, rock, and global rhythms, performed as a 12-piece ensemble at the event. The line-up featured talented musicians such as Daceli Almonte on vocals, Ivan Pierre on guitar, Yohenny Agramonte on bass, and Nicolás Mondragón on alto saxophone and flute. Óscar Gerónimo contributed his skills on clarinet, while the percussion section, comprising Evaristo Moreno, Berlin Moreno, and Michell Moreno (who also played the güira), drove the rhythm. The winds section, with its transitions between trombone, flute, alto saxophone, clarinet, and bass clarinet, provided a rich, textured sound that enhanced the band’s eclectic style. The ensemble was further enriched by guest vocalists Caridad Severino, Ruth Brillante, and Yomaira Moreno

Toné Vicioso led the performance on guitar and vocals, bringing over 40 years of expertise in exploring and evolving Dominican musical traditions. Also known for his work with La Carisalve, Vicioso brought his extensive expertise and passion to the stage, complemented by a group of young musicians who added fresh energy and new ideas to the stage.
