Daily Discovery: RoD – Piel Canela (feat. Manuela Zapata)

Peruvian saxophonist and composer RoD (Rodrigo Romero) delivers a reimagining of the classic bolero “Piel Canela,” originally written by Puerto Rican composer Bobby Capó. Anchored by the warm, expressive vocals of Colombian singer Manuela Zapata, this version finds its footing at the intersection of Latin American tradition and modern jazz. The arrangement leans into Afro-Peruvian rhythmic structures—particularly evident in the cajón and congas—while RoD’s tenor saxophone navigates the melody with lyrical phrasing and controlled improvisation, respecting the song’s emotional core without veering into excessive ornamentation.

Drawn from RoD’s 2025 album Libre Esencia, recorded in New Jersey, the track is performed by a seasoned ensemble that includes Samuel Vicente on piano, Gabriel Balado on upright bass, Raul Abbad Huaman on guitar, Eric Dupont on drums, and RobertoChinoBolaños on percussions. The production is clean and spacious, allowing each instrumental voice to contribute to the overall dynamic without crowding Zapata’s nuanced vocal lead. “Piel Canela” is a version that feels rooted and searching at once, shaped by deep respect for tradition but unafraid to explore where the form might go next.
