Daily Discovery: Kaliman – Mon Kali

French reggae group Kaliman, led by Senegalese MC Abib, dropped a remastered version of their classic “Mon Kali” on the 14th of February, to mark its 20th anniversary.

Originally written in 2000, the song remains a powerful anthem of identity, justice, and cultural pride. Blending reggae rhythms with a ragga-dancehall flow, it redefines kali—slang for a blunt—as a symbol of the microphone, a tool for empowerment and social change. Its lyrics, tackling resistance and self-expression, remain as relevant today as ever.

The Paris-based band, known for fusing urban accents with Afro-Caribbean rootsy sounds, also announced their new single Papier (out 12th March), tackling migrant hardships. Kicking off the year with a steady stream of releases, they plan to unveil a new single each month in the lead-up to their upcoming album. Marking their 20th anniversary, the album will continue their tradition of merging activism with infectious grooves, encouraging listeners to “find their kali”—their purpose—through music.
