Daily Discovery: Jamaican Jazz Orchestra – Kelly Green

The Jamaican Jazz Orchestra, a Flemish ensemble led by guitarist Wouter ‘Wowie’ Rosseel, returns with their new single “Kelly Green,” a vibrant track from their recent EP, All For A Reason. This five-track EP, released by Zephyrus Records after a five-year hiatus, encapsulates Rosseel’s musical journey through the challenging years of 2020 to 2022. Each track reflects the healing and inspiration Rosseel found in music during this period.

“Kelly Green” revisits the rhythmic vibe of Skatalites’ “Rockfort Rock” while carving its own path. The track benefits from the fresh energy of trombonist Timothé Le Maire, the assertive tones of baritone saxophonist Ruben Verbruggen, and the dynamic interplay between organist Karel Cuelenaere and trumpeter Marie-Anne Standaert.

Formed with a vision to find the sweet spot between jazz and Jamaican music, the Jamaican Jazz Orchestra draws influences from the likes of Ernest Ranglin, Django Reinhardt, and the Skatalites. Their sound is a sophisticated fusion of rocksteady, swing jazz, reggae, and dub, balancing intricate improvisation with the infectious rhythms of Caribbean music.
