With Bagola, their debut full-length solo album, Trio Da Kali presents a powerful blend of heritage, harmony, and heartfelt artistry. At first listen, the album takes us on a journey through spatial melodies with playful, familiar accompaniments. There’s a measured simplicity in how layers are applied, allowing both key vocal messages and instrumental conversations to shine through without crowding each other.
Following their critically acclaimed 2017 collaboration with the Kronos Quartet, Ladilikan, this new release is just as poignant in its messaging and refined in its arrangements. While Ladilikan explored the possibilities of cross-cultural fusion, Bagola sees the trio returning to their core sound with renewed confidence.
We start the album with the title track “Bagola”, where lively rhythms meet to create a spirited critique of male attitudes in Malian society. “Orpaillage” stands out in its sombre reflection and lament for environmental degradation. Similar to these two tracks, the album balances lightness in instrumental accompaniment with the gentle heaviness of the lyricism. Recorded in Bamako, “Deme” is an uplifting track built on lilting, nuanced repetitions that reflect the deep Malian roots woven throughout the album.
Instrumentally, the trio’s synergy is as captivating as ever. Hawa Kasse Mady Diabaté, celebrated for her deep roots in Kela’s griot tradition, delivers gentle, soaring, yet emotionally resonant vocals. Lassana Diabaté’s balafon lines are both intricate and fluid, while Madou Kouyaté’s ngoni bass provides warmth and grounding. His deep, breathy harmonies further enrich the songs’ emotional depth.
Bagola thrives on simplistic restraint, never oversaturated, and each moment feels intentional. What emerges is a cohesive soundscape that is distinctly Malian in its roots, yet broad in its emotional reach. It is music that speaks gently and sometimes playfully, but leaves a lasting impression.
