Daily Discovery: El Far3i – Rayha | الفرعي – رايحة

El Far3i wrote “Rayha” with fatherhood on his mind. He promises his child they’ll wake the plants together when the sun dips low. There’ll be a little shade for the hard days too. With a child at home, he sings, he can’t go back to “singing songs of sorrow”.

The Palestinian-Jordanian songwriter, rapper and drummer from Amman has been making two kinds of records since 2012: acoustic albums on guitar under his own name, plus Arabic rap as Far3 El Madakhil. Along the way he co-founded the bands El Morabba3 and 47Soul. Arab Drumz, the company that also manages him, released “Rayha” on 16 October. It’s an acoustic song, with his voice climbing higher than before over the dissonant guitar chords his earlier acoustic records are known for. Dave Scott co-produced and mixed it with him, and Mazen Murad mastered it.

Rayha means “passing”. The chorus pictures a cloud drifting over worries and lost dreams. It lets a little rain fall before moving on, so the good days come back with the flowers. There’s a harder edge too. He tells “all those who keep us down” that “we won’t carry the weight”. Every injustice, however big, will fall, he promises. We are all wanderers passing through, he sings; afterwards we’ll rise like eagles.

Ahmad Jalboush filmed the video in Amman at dawn, following the city as the first light grows into a bright, sunny day.
