Daily Discovery: NRG 5 – Technicals Inside (Chiminyo ft. Oscar Jerome, Charlie Stacey, Kaidi Akinnibi, Rudi C, Magnus Mehta)

Chiminyo‘s “Technicals Inside” comes from NRG 5, the fifth entry in the drummer’s live improvisation series, recorded at Peckham Levels in south London and out on 8 May. Conceived as a space for improvisational electronic expression outside the usual industry framing, the session brings together Oscar Jerome on guitar, Kaidi Akinnibi‘s saxophone, Charlie Stacey, handling keys and synths, Rudi Creswick on bass, bass synth and sampler, and Magnus Mehta adding percussion alongside Chiminyo’s drums.

Chiminyo works across London’s jazz and electronic scenes, including Maisha and Cykada, and curates the Late Late Electronic nights at Ronnie Scott’s. The NRG sessions bring musicians together to shape the music in real time, with the room’s close, concrete setting at Peckham Levels feeding directly into the sound. Some of these players have 15 years of shared work behind them.

“Technicals Inside” is one of the more atmospheric pieces on the record. Stacey’s synths set the harmonic frame, Jerome’s guitar moves between clipped phrases and longer lines, and Akinnibi threads the arrangement with a saxophone part that keeps shifting direction. Creswick holds down the low end while dropping in samples from an Akai, and Mehta’s percussion extends the rhythmic exchange around Chiminyo’s drums. The whole thing is improvised, but it stays focused. You hear a group building form on the spot without losing control.
