Your Ticket to… Ska

This ticket is for a trip back in time, to the roots of one of the most popular upbeat music styles: ska. The origins of the genre date back to the late 1950s, when Jamaican music producers like Prince Buster, Clement “Sir Coxsone” Dodd and Duke Reid formed the first sound systems on the Caribbean island.

They also started to record and release local artists (among them Desmond Dekker, Ken Booth, Roland Alphonso, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Jimmy Cliff, The Skatalites, …) who were playing a mix between the autochthonous calypso and mento, and the music broadcasted by American radio stations like R&B, blues and jazz.

The result is what lately became one of the most influential music styles, which induced the birth of rocksteady, reggae, 2 Tone and ska-punk and eventually inspired the global popular culture.re
