General Echo Sound System
Walthamstow Trades Hall
Monthly reggae disco in North-East London. The night is named after sadly departed MC Earl Anthony Robinson, the voice behind classic deejay tunes such as “Drunken Master”.
For our July session we’re excited to welcome back a proper heavyweight selector, Lloyd ‘Musclehead’ Francis of the legendary Saxon Sound System! He tore the roof off when he played for us a couple of summers ago, and we’re expecting another masterclass in 45 selection this time round.
Saxon Sound System was started in 1976 in Lewisham by Dennis Rowe and Musclehead. By the early 80’s due in no small part to their highly talented MC’s and singers such as Tippa Irie, Smiley Culture, Peter King, Papa Levi, Maxi Priest, Daddy Colonel and Sandy they were the most popular Sound System in the UK, scoring chart hits with some of their artists. They went on to win numerous Sound System clashes and cups, and continue to play internationally, including an annual outing at London’s Notting Hill Carnival. Their style has influenced artists such as Massive Attack (who invited them to play at the 2008 Meltdown festival, which they curated, and The Bug (who has collaborated with Tippa Irie and Saxon selector Trevor Sax).
Musclehead is an experienced selector who plays all styles from vintage rocksteady classics to dancehall to unique one-off dubplates.
Come and listen to some of the greatest music ever made in a beautiful old school social
