Event Preview: NIYAZ with Azam Ali & نياز أعظم علي @ Grand Junction (London; Monday 7th November 2022)

These are momentous and delicate days for the Iranian population. Days of change, self-determination and empowerment. Days that to be thoroughly understood by non-Iranian eyes and ears have to be described, explained and possibly sung and represented by someone born there and who’s deeply involved with the country’s recent history.

That’s why the show going on stage on Monday 7th November at the Grand Junction in Paddington is something more than a gig. That’s not only because NIYAZ is an original, forward-looking and passionate take on the Persian classical tradition, blending Sufi poetry with Middle Eastern folktales and rarefied and ethereal electronic arrangements. Or because the duo formed by vocalist and composer Azam Ali and multi-instrumentalist and composer Loga Ramin Torkian hasn’t performed a gig in the UK since 2012. But also because attending the performance is a way to get a heartfelt and open glimpse on the Iranian present.
