Daily Discovery: Yurt Party – Pocket Weasel (95bFM Live Session)

Christchurch’s Yurt Party deliver “Pocket Weasel”, a kinetic instrumental that feels like it’s always about to pull a prank. Violin leads, drums push, and there’s an edge in how the momentum shifts — one moment cheeky, the next urgent.

The spark: violinist Lorenz Weston-Salzer recalls an off-hand comment by Marlon Williams, “pick a couple of notes and pretend you’re trying to remember a song you used to know,” and that became the seed. The result “scurries, scrambles, and stomps like a caffeinated critter loose in a café.” The band sees it as a borderline mashup: part Eastern European stomp, part Irish jig — and all mischief.

This track is the flagbearer for their forthcoming second album 200, out 24 October 2025. Give it a spin — it’s brief, bold, and unapologetically alive.

Yurt Party perform live in the lounge for Friday Live on 95bFM Drive.
