“Amann Amann” introduces Siwane with a first single ahead of a debut album arriving in November. Recorded in Lyon with guitarist and composer Stani Jardel, the track draws on popular melodies from Al-Andalus, the Muslim-ruled region that spanned most of the Iberian peninsula between 711 and 1492.
The ensemble brings together vocalist Mounia Siwane with Lyon-based musicians Vincent Domergue on electric bass, Wendlavim Zabsonré on drums and percussion, and Mohamed M’Sahel on percussion. Jardel leads on electric guitar, composition, and arrangements. Their work is rooted in Andalusian melodic figures but articulated through a contemporary improvising language.
At its centre is Mounia Siwane’s repeated invocation of “amann amann”, sung in a plain, direct style. Jardel threads electric guitar lines that adapt Al-Andalus motifs through modal shifts and harmonic turns. Bass and drums hold the ground while percussion opens rhythmic counterpoints, giving the ensemble room to move against the fixed vocal call.
Released on 5 September, the single sets the tone for the forthcoming album, extending a dialogue between centuries-old repertoire and the immediacy of contemporary performance.
