Indigenous Paiwan artist Sauljaljui has released a remix of her single ‘Dipin Kari Tang’ in collaboration with the Taiwu Ballads Troupe and Colombian producer ‘Indus. “Dipin Kari Tang,” which translates to “bread, curry, hedgehog” in Mauritian Creole, blends rhythms from Taiwan, Mauritius, and Colombia.
Discovered during Sauljaljui’s travels in Mauritius, the original tune incorporates Creole rhythms into Paiwan musical traditions enhanced by the Taiwu Ballads Troupe’s soulful harmonies. Indus enriches the remix with currulao, a Colombian genre featuring Afro-Pacific percussions. Drummer Jayr Torres contributes cununo, bombo, and qasa drums, recorded in homage to his father Gualajo‘s musical legacy.
The single’s artwork, designed by QUAND, visually embodies the unity of diverse cultures and nature, incorporating symbols like the dodo bird from Mauritius and motifs from indigenous Taiwanese culture.
Featured in Sauljaljui’s latest album Vaivaik (released in mid-December via Taiwanese label Wind Music), the remix highlights her mission to bridge global musical traditions, while Indus’s production furthers his exploration of ancestral rhythms through electronic experimentation.
