Daily Discovery: Salin – Rammana

Thai-born drummer, producer and composer Salin presents a fresh interpretation of “Rammana”, a traditional folk song of the Urak Lawoi, an Indigenous sea nomad community from southern Thailand. Traditionally performed during the Plajak ceremony—a ritual marking the beginning and end of the rainy season—the song invites ancestral spirits to join in celebration with the community.

In this new version, Salin blends the song’s ceremonial roots with a contemporary sound, combining traditional Thai instruments with Afro-jazz, funk, and soul influences. The result is part of what she describes as Afro-Isaan soul, a meeting point between Northeast Thai traditions and the rhythmic language of 1970s West Africa.

Co-produced with Thai and Canadian musicians, “Rammana” continues Salin’s cross-cultural exploration of rhythm, identity, and heritage. It follows her debut album Cosmic Island and offers a preview of her upcoming second release.
