Daily Discovery: Saigon Soul Revival – Sầu Đông (Live on KEXP)

Seattle independent radio KEXP presents Saigon Soul Revival performing “Sầu Đông” live at l’Antipode in Rennes, France, during Trans Musicales 2024. Recorded on the 7th of December, this performance showcases the band’s unique fusion of Vietnamese retro-soul, psychedelic rock, and garage influences, a sound they’ve cultivated since their inception in Ho Chi Minh City in 2016.

Saigon Soul Revival is dedicated to reviving the raw, live energy of 1960s and ’70s Vietnamese rock and soul music. Their lineup features Minh Anh Nguyễn on vocals, Đăng Nguyễn Khoa on keyboards, Indy Laville on guitar and đàn nguyệt, Gabriel Kaouro on bass, Hiếu Nguyễn Hương Bảo on drums, and renowned traditional musician Hải Phượng Nguyễn on đàn tranh and đàn bầu.

“Sầu Đông,” a melancholic ballad by Vietnamese composer Khánh Băng, was first reimagined by the band on their 2019 debut album Họa Âm Xưa, a collection that breathes new life into pre-1975 Vietnamese songs through thoughtful, contemporary arrangements.
