Langendorf United’s live performance of Hymn channels cosmic energy, drawing on the influence of Sun Ra and Mulatu Astatke to create a hypnotic, genre-defying blend of psychedelic rhythms and spiritual jazz. The quintet, led by Swedish saxophonist Lina Langendorf, showcases a dynamic fusion of global sounds, pushing the boundaries of jazz with a bold, rhythmic exploration.
The roots of Langendorf United trace back to 2013 when Langendorf traveled to Addis Ababa to study Ethiopian scales and tonalities, inspired by the works of Mulatu Astatke, Getatchew Mekuria, and Hailu Mergia.
“Hymn,” originally released in February 2023 as part of their debut double album Yeahno Yowouw Land (via Black Sweat Records), now features as a live recording from their performance at Stockholm’s Fasching. This rendition is included in A Song is a Dream (and Dreams are Real!), a compilation celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the DIY label Sing a Song Fighter, set for release on November 9th.
Reflecting on the Fasching concert, Langendorf United recalls, “After not playing together for a year, reuniting with the band and sharing that moment with the audience was incredible. The surprise addition of extra musicians for the last song, which no one except Lina knew about, made the night even more magical. It was an impromptu collaboration that took everyone by surprise and added to the unforgettable experience.”
