A lively cumbia rhythm keeps “Tu Marea” moving while La Yegros and Natalia Doco sing about leaving a lover whose moods come and go like the tide. The Spanish title is a pun on exactly that: tu marea means “your tide”, me marea means “it makes me seasick”. La Yegros has asked her fans to dance to it loose, on their own or with whoever they like.
Her producer of more than twenty years, Gaby Kerpel, also known as King Coya, wrote the song. X-Ray Production released it on 16 October as the first single from her fifth album, the follow-up to Haz (2024).
Though born in Buenos Aires, La Yegros draws on the music of Misiones, her parents’ home province on the borders with Brazil and Paraguay, where dances run on chamamé and cumbia. She set those rhythms to electronic beats on “Viene de Mí”, the 2013 hit that took her voice well beyond Argentina. That success came in the same weeks her fifteen-year marriage was ending, a time she has been thinking about again as “Tu Marea” comes out. Her duet partner Natalia Doco, who is both Argentine and French, was born in Buenos Aires too. Doco now records for her own label, Casa del Árbol, pulling the same cumbia, along with reggaeton and cha cha, into experimental pop.
