Daily Discovery: Kankélé – Bala Groove

Franco-Burkinabè group Kankélé announces the release of their second album, Bala Groove, featuring a fusion of Mande tradition, jazz, blues, funk, and Afro-groove influences. The album includes songs in Bambara, Soussou, Wolof, and Spanish, reflecting the band’s diverse musical and cultural influences.

The title track, “Bala Groove,” defines Kankélé’s signature “Mandé ni Wassolo Bala Groove” style, developed under the direction of Oumarou Bambara (also known as Mandela), a Burkinabè multi-instrumentalist, composer, and arranger. The album highlights the balafon, central to Mandé music traditions, alongside Sabar rhythms and Senegalese percussion, blending traditional instruments with bass and drums to create an Afro-groove sound.

With Bala Groove, Kankélé builds on the success of their debut album, expanding their musical reach while maintaining a strong connection to West African traditions.
