Daily Discovery: Grup Yorum – Çav Bella

Grup Yorum and a collective of fellow musicians performed “Çav Bella,” the Turkish adaptation of “Bella Ciao,” during a concert at the Harbiye Open Air Stage in Istanbul back in 2012.

“Bella Ciao,” originally a 19th-century Italian folk song, was embraced by anti-fascist partisans during World War II and became a powerful symbol of resistance. It marked the struggle that led to Italy’s liberation from fascism, Nazi occupation, and their collaborators on 25 April 1945. Since then, the song has crossed borders, evolving into a global anthem of defiance and solidarity.

This performance brings that spirit into a new setting, with Grup Yorum—a band long rooted in political activism and folk protest traditions—leading a powerful collective voice on stage.

More than a song, it’s a thread of resistance woven through generations, continually reborn in the hands and voices of those who refuse to stay silent.
