Daily Discovery: Georgie Hume & The Pity Party – Parquet Parakeet

Georgie Hume & The Pity Party formed in London in 2023, led by guitarist George Hume with Silas Maitland on bass and Loris Peverani on drums. Their sound, described as “tropical jazz”, is rooted in the jumpy swing of early 1960s Jamaican jazz and Cuban rhythmic structures.

Their new single “Parquet Parakeet”, released 19 September on ZeroFret Recordings, began with a chord idea from Wes Montgomery before taking on a more angular shape. The piece moves between a Tom Waits–inspired section full of syncopation and tension, a straighter 4/4 passage that resolves the pull, and a short central break that briefly eases the pace before the closing climax sharpens into darker territory.

Recorded live at Sweet Amps in Hackney, the track takes its name from the parakeets that sweep across nearby Victoria Park — flashes of green that feel playful yet slightly threatening. That image mirrors the music’s restless syncopation and abrupt shifts, where George Hume’s guitar touches both the jagged phrasing of Marc Ribot and the slide-inflected tone of Ry Cooder.

“Parquet Parakeet” marks the first release on ZeroFret Recordings and previews the trio’s self-titled debut album, due on 3 October. It follows a year of momentum that has seen festival appearances at Red Rooster and Ealing Jazz Festival, a collaboration with Ade Omotayo, and strong early radio support from Jazz FM and Soho Radio.
