Gata Galáctica wrote “Filosofía” in 2021, the first song they put together as a band in Portland, and it has opened or closed almost every set since. The track finally got recorded in 2024 at Cooper Mountain Sound with engineer Justin Robert Chase, and it comes out now as the A-side of a 7″ vinyl single, Filosofía / Manos Sucias.
“Filosofía” is chicha played loud: Andrez and Manny‘s guitars cycle reverb-soaked phrases over and over while J‘s percussion refuses to let up. Dylan‘s bass and Chris‘s drums underneath keep the whole thing heavy and moving forward.
The single puts two instrumental cumbias on either side of a 45, the same format that carried chicha and tropical rock across Latin America through the 1960s and 70s.
