“Tiempo al Tiempo” is the title track from Colectivo Zafra‘s debut album (Tiny Moon Records, 2024). Composed by bandleader and double bassist Charly Drop, the song exemplifies the group’s unique fusion of jazz with contemporary urban sonorities and Latin influences.
Based in A Coruña, Spain, Colectivo Zafra formed in 2017 when its members met at the city’s Conservatory of Music. The band fuses contemporary jazz with Afro-Caribbean rhythms, Latin American influences, and urban sounds.
“Tiempo al Tiempo” captures this blend, layering syncopated Latin jazz grooves with rich harmonies and intricate horn arrangements. Charly Drop’s fluid bass lines and Miguel Cabana’s dynamic drumming provide a solid rhythmic foundation, while Pablo Añón’s saxophone and William Díaz Pozo’s trombone lead the melodic interplay, shifting between tight unison lines and expressive solos. Iago Mourinho’s piano work adds harmonic depth, complementing the horn section with rhythmic comping and fluid improvisation.
Structured around rhythmic call-and-response, the track moves through swing-infused sections, groove-heavy passages, and improvisational breaks, showcasing the band’s grasp of both traditional and contemporary jazz. Their interplay keeps the composition fluid, balancing spontaneity with a strong sense of cohesion.
