Daily Discovery: Calibro 35 – Discomania

“Discomania” is the second single from Milan-based instrumental group Calibro 35, a reinterpretation of Piero Umiliani’s 1978 track. Their version introduces an afro-funk pulse to the original, pushing its disco-era groove into new territory. It’s a clear example of the band’s ability to draw from the past without replicating it, using vintage material as a starting point rather than a destination.

The track leads into their upcoming album Exploration, set for release on the 6th June 2025 via Record Kicks. Like their earlier work, the album continues to revisit and reshape archival sounds, layering them with live instrumentation and rhythm-forward arrangements.

Formed in Milan in 2007, Calibro 35 are known for their early focus on 60s and 70s Italian film scores, they’ve since carved out a distinct sound that moves between library music, funk, and experimental rock. “Discomania” sits comfortably in that space—lean, rhythmic, and sharply tuned to both where the music came from and where it might go next.
