Daily Discovery: BANTU – Disco Highlife (Live Cover Tribute to Orlando Julius)

Lagos collective BANTU salutes the legacy of Nigerian highlife-funk pioneer Orlando Julius. Originally released in 1976, “Disco Hi-Life” remains one of Julius’s most recognisable works, a seamless meeting of highlife rhythm and funk-driven brass.

Based between Lagos and Berlin, BANTU (Brotherhood Alliance Navigating Towards Unity) is the 13-piece ensemble led by Ade Bantu. Known for politically charged afrobeat and Yoruba percussion, here they shift focus toward celebration. Recorded live at Planet Earth Studios in Berlin, the performance places crisp horns, layered congas, and tightly woven vocal harmonies at the centre, creating a vibrant update that honours Julius’s exuberant spirit.

The tribute underlines both the group’s deep ties to Nigerian musical heritage and their ongoing transnational presence. By reviving “Disco Hi-Life” in a contemporary live format, BANTU reinforce Julius’s place in the lineage of African music while affirming their own role in carrying it forward.
