When it comes to supporting artists that we care about and have followed the career step-by-step, you don’t need to ask us twice. That’s why we welcome and are more than happy to share with you the call of one of our favourite “local” singer-songwriters.
We started following Zambian-Scottish musician Namvula three years ago, when she launched her debut album Shiwezwa at Old Queen’s Head in London.
After a three year (busy) hiatus spent touring, she is (almost) ready to record her second album inspired by the women who have touched and influenced her life and music. She gave life to an Indiegogo campaign, which has entered its final straight and you can help her to make it happen following this LINK!
We also asked her to introduce her new project to us and that’s what she said…
“After touring the first, critically-acclaimed album for three years, it’s now time for a new musical adventure…and so begins the second album! I wanted to reinterpret the lives and the stories of some of the girls and women who – over time and place – have moved and inspired me, and to explore the explosion of nuance that is femalehood. A creatively more mature album, I’ve been exploring a more open sound, listening to a lot of 80s Afro-psychedelia and blending elements of this into the bedrock of what existed before: touches of jazz, folk and funk/rock.
We’ll be recording the album live with the six-piece band over three days in London, in just under a month. I’m excited to be working with some of the same phenomenal musicians that I’ve toured and recorded with: Mercury-nominated bassist and producer Liran Donin, percussionist Mamadou Sarr (Baaba Maal), Mercury-nominated saxophonist Chris Williams, guitarist Phil Dawson (Mulatu Astatke), and drummer Yuval ‘Juba’ Wetzler. Long-time collaborator kora player Kadialy Kouyate will also be featuring on some of the tracks.
Recording independently – without label support – is expensive, which is why I’ve turned to that wonderful, democratic platform for funding independent projects, Indiegogo, to help make the second album possible. Your support will go directly to the nuts and bolts of making the record: the hire of rehearsal, recording and mixing studios, engineers’ fees, musicians’ session fees, producer fees, mastering, and manufacture. So far the campaign has had fantastic backing, but still needs additional support. The aim is to get to a minimum of £7500, which will ensure all the physical aspects of the recording. Anything above that will go towards PR (so people know about the album!), and album artwork. Join the journey in co-creating this second album!“
