Daily Discovery: Dos Santos – Money Gun

Chicago quintet Dos Santos recorded “Money Gun” as the lead single for Es Amor, their first album in five years, released through Otherly Love Records. The track follows the fast cumbia tempos found in Mexican grupero band music.

The band have worked the edges of Latin music since forming in 2013. Bandleader Alex E. Chávez sings and plays guitar and organ, leading a group whose roots reach Puerto Rico, Panama, Mexico, and the American Midwest. Grammy-nominated Beto Martinez produced the record, drawing the band’s cumbia, son jarocho, and Afro-Cuban rhythm into one sound.

Writing late one night, Chávez kept circling a melody whose source escaped him. Weeks later, digging through archives in Texas, he found it: a song his father had written and recorded decades before, which he had reconstructed without realising. That discovery became the spine of the record, which traces what one generation hands to the next across borders and years.
