“Pendolino” opens Hootini’s debut EP with a brass line that cuts straight through. The London nine-piece build on a hip-hop-derived groove, keeping the bass weight low while the horns push the arrangement forward. Andrew Liddel wrote the track, with solos from Liddel alongside Jahan Meeran and Chris Vickers. The EP also includes “Decaffeinated Soya Milk Latte”, “Banana and Crisps” and “Will Whiting’s Lament”.
Hootini describe themselves as a weird and wonky take on London’s musical cultures, pulling from jazz, Afro-Latin, hip-hop, Balkan, funk, dubstep and drum & bass. They have taken that mix to festivals including Love Supreme, Secret Garden Party, Cheltenham Jazz Festival and Lambeth Country Show, plus sharing bills with Steamdown and Space Ghetto, and run Incahoots nights with Town of Cats in London and Brighton. “Pendolino” sounds like their live shows: contemporary jazz writing backed by a heavy horn front line.
