Prague-based duo Rust sharpen their vision of Electro-Tarab on the new single “Saat”, released via Belgium’s Rebel Up! Records. Formed in October 2020, the Syrian-Lebanese project has steadily carved out a sound that challenges fixed notions of Arab identity by bringing Arabic musical traditions into dialogue with contemporary electronic production.
Composed with lyrics by Egyptian writer Nada Elshabrawy, “Saat” turns on a set of contrasts. The track is propelled by dark, pulsing electronic rhythms while Arabic vocal lines cut through with a raw emotional intensity. Elshabrawy’s words dwell on the shifting tides between love and hate, while the duo frame them in a modern electronic landscape that heightens the contradictions at its core.
“Saat” continues Rust’s project of building an Arab electronic form that keeps traditional vocal phrasing and programmed production in audible tension. Its release also signals the group’s deepening relationship with Rebel Up!, setting the ground for further projects to follow.
