Daily Discovery: LANGENDORF UNITED – Ethiopia Ewdeshalehu

Langendorf United release “Ethiopia Ewdeshalehu”, the final single before their second album Undercover Beast arrives later this month. The title, meaning “Ethiopia, I love you” in Amharic, is sung through vocoder by Daniel Bingert, carried by a rhythm section locked in polyrhythm.”

Formed in Sweden in 2023 by saxophonist Lina Langendorf, the group has become known for connecting Ethio-jazz traditions with contemporary European improvisation. Langendorf’s long ties to Addis Ababa include performances with Alemayehu Eshete and sessions at Mulatu Astatke’s African Jazz Village, experiences that shape her phrasing on this track.

The composition builds around polyrhythmic drumming, upright bass, and layered keyboards, with Langendorf’s saxophone tracing lines that alternate between call and surge. Guitar and viola fill the ensemble texture, while the refrain anchors the performance in dedication.

Released one week before the Ethiopian New Year, “Ethiopia Ewdeshalehu” reflects Langendorf’s connection to Ethiopia, shaped by the people she worked with and the stages she played on there.
