The live version of Jultrane‘s “Le Petit Parapente Alpin”, performed on Deli Express for TSFJAZZ, opens with a short, low-register pizzicato line on double bass from Gabriel Pierre. Frédéric D’Oelsnitz responds with clipped piano chords, and the horns — Julien Ndiaye on tenor saxophone, Cyril Galamini on trombone, and Renaud Gensane on trumpet — state the theme in unison. The melody is angular and intervallic, phrased in tight synchrony without embellishment.
Julien Ndiaye, performing as Jultrane, was born in France and is now based in Paris. Before turning to music full-time, he worked as a welder, lived in Dakar for three years studying Wolof, and spent time as a paragliding pilot. The track’s title, “Le Petit Parapente Alpin”, references that part of his past. The group performing here also recorded his debut album Création, released in early 2025.
Solos remain within the harmonic framework set by the head. Gensane’s trumpet phrases are sparse and articulated in short bursts. Galamini’s trombone follows with longer lines, before Ndiaye plays a concise saxophone solo, mostly working with repeated motifs and sustained notes. Laurent Sarrien maintains an open, off-centre drum pulse throughout, loosening the time feel without breaking form.
The session was recorded live on French radio station TSFJAZZ and broadcast ahead of the group’s performance at Sunside in Paris that evening. The full lineup features Julien Ndiaye (tenor saxophone), Cyril Galamini (trombone), Renaud Gensane (trumpet, bugle), Frédéric D’Oelsnitz (piano), Gabriel Pierre (double bass), and Laurent Sarrien (drums).
