On 15 September 2023, the Nationaal Jeugd Jazz Orkest (NJJO), led by acclaimed trumpeter Maite Hontelé, performed “Nochecita” at Bimhuis Amsterdam. Composed by award-winning Juancho Valencia, this piece fuses mambo rhythms with contemporary jazz, creating a vibrant soundscape that embodies love and emotional connection.
Maite Hontelé is a distinguished figure in the global jazz scene, celebrated for her powerful trumpet playing and innovative contributions. With multiple Latin Grammy nominations, she currently serves as the artistic leader of the NJJO.
The NJJO provides a crucial platform for young talent in the Netherlands, showcasing a variety of musical styles under Hontelé’s mentorship. The orchestra is embarking on a two-year coaching programme, preparing for national and international tours that include initiatives like Maite Hontelé’s NJJO Goes Mambo! This project delves into various mambo styles, blending jazz improvisation with Latin grooves to enhance the musical experience for both musicians and audiences.
