Daily Discovery: Tchega – Kayamba

Carole Katz, a singer-songwriter born on Réunion Island to Madagascan parents, grew up immersed in ballroom rhythms and French musicals. After moving to Perth, Western Australia for her education, she deepened her connection to her native island’s music and dance styles, sega and maloya.

With her project Tchega, Carole collaborates with musicians from around the Indian Ocean—percussionist Tao Issaro, bassist Nathan Joseph, and guitarist Ridge Moss—to blend authentic island sounds with contemporary influences. Her new single, “Kayamba,” showcases this fusion, inviting listeners on a vibrant journey through the musical landscapes of the Indian Ocean.

The song is a tribute to the kayamb, a traditional shaker from Reunion Island, celebrating its role in fostering community and connection through music. It highlights how the instrument serves as a medium for expressing a wide range of emotions, from sorrow to joy, and for sharing stories among people. By showcasing the kayamb’s ability to bring individuals together, the tune honours the cultural heritage of Reunion Island and emphasises the universal power of music to unite and inspire.
