The Killdeer String Band, formed in central Washington in 2015, is a four-piece instrumental acoustic group known for their energetic blend of original and traditional music. The band consists of Jenny Humphrey on fiddle, Josh Humphrey on guitar, Justin Gibbens on upright bass, and Jacob Gibbens on percussion. They combine styles ranging from Irish and gypsy to Bavarian and bluegrass, creating a unique sound that explores the boundaries of traditional acoustic music.
Their single “Essaouira,” featured on their second album Wise Fools, exemplifies their signature mix of Middle Eastern influences, folk, indie and prog rock elements.
Recorded at Velvetone Studios with support from the Ellensburg Arts Commission during the COVID-19 pandemic, “Essaouira” showcases the band’s diverse musical backgrounds—including Celtic fiddling, classical violin, Turkish oud, and Hindustani classical music.
