In just under two weeks, we will set sail on a musical journey, island hopping between Java and the Visayan, exploring the sounds of South-East Asia.
On Friday the 5th of May, Arsenal of Sounds, our monthly music series at Woolwich Works, will feature a double-bill showcasing the soothing and warm timbres of a gamelan ensemble and the far-reaching folksy and soulful songwriting of a British-Filipino singer/songwriter and her band.
Let us introduce you to one of the two acts performing on the evening – Ruhiya. Her music combines soul, folk, and sacred chants to share stories and sounds about her Visayans roots. Her debut album, Ginhawa, weaves together themes of nature, femininity, and spirit from her matriarchal Visayan Filipina heritage.
To give you a taste of her music, she has shared with us a playlist of her influences and inspirations…
