On Saturday, 22 June, at Portico Gallery in West Norwood, will host a special fundraiser backing Youthsayers. Since 2016, this local music education initiative in South London has been igniting passions and talents in underprivileged youth through free jazz, afrobeat, and reggae sessions. Under the guidance of Robin Hopcraft and Idris Rahman from Soothsayers, Youthsayers focuses on empowering underprivileged youth while nurturing their musical proficiency, leadership skills, and confidence.
The night will include performances by none other than Prince Fatty, known for his signature reggae and dub productions, and Soothsayers, celebrated for their blend of afrobeat, roots reggae, and jazz. Youthsayers will grace the stage alongside the one-and-only “Afrobeat Ambassador” Dele Sosimi. Also on the lineup is Big Massive, a group that merges jazz with hip-hop and break beats, fresh from their appearance at the Brick Lane Jazz Festival. Dom Servini of Wah Wah 45s will round out the evening with an eclectic DJ-set.
This event will also serve as the launch party for Youthsayers’ debut album, Don’t Blame The Youth, which is set to release on the 29th of June. The album features a dynamic mix of jazz, afrobeat, and reggae, showcasing the group’s diverse and fresh musical talents and reflecting the vibrant cultural landscape of South London.
Proceeds from ticket sales will fund a free holiday music course for young people aged 13 to 18, nurturing their musical growth. So, don’t miss this chance to enjoy great music and support a vital community initiative at Portico Gallery.
