Event Preview: BaianaSystem @ HERE at Outernet (London; Wednesday, 10th September 2025)

BaianaSystem hit London on 10 September at HERE at Outernet, bringing the raw electricity of Salvador’s carnival to the heart of the city. The date lands right in the middle of their whirlwind Lundu Rock Show European tour, a run of ten cities in two weeks: Dublin (9), London (10), Porto (12), Lisbon (13), Amsterdam (17), Geneva (18), Zurich (20) and Berlin (21 September). Just two days after the London show, the band release their new album O Mundo Dá Voltas (12 September), a heavyweight record featuring collaborations with Anitta, Seu Jorge, Gilberto Gil, Emicida and Antonio Carlos & Jocafi.

O Mundo Dá Voltas captures BaianaSystem’s restlessness and refusal to be pinned down. At its core is the guitarra baiana, Salvador’s wiry, electrified guitar, which slices through samba-reggae, pagodão, ijexá and rock, feeding into bass-heavy production that nods to sound-system culture. Russo Passapusso’s sharp, politically charged vocals cut across the noise, giving each track a lyrical urgency. It is an album that deepens their carnival DNA while opening new doors through bold collaborations and global reach.

On stage, BaianaSystem push those ideas into overdrive. Their eight-piece live set blurs the boundaries between a gig and a bloco, weaving percussion, DJ-driven beats and jagged guitar riffs into a sensory overload of sound and visuals. The band’s performances are improvisational by design: an ijexá can morph into heavy rock or reggae depending on the crowd, with Roberto Barreto’s guitar and Passapusso’s voice steering the shifts. “No two shows are alike,” as guitarist Barreto has put it, and that unpredictability is exactly what charges the atmosphere.

For London, expect more than a concert. BaianaSystem are staging an exchange, pulling Salvador’s carnival energy into HERE at Outernet, a new 2,000-capacity venue in the heart of Soho that has quickly become one of the capital’s most talked-about live spaces. With O Mundo Dá Voltas landing the same week, the show doubles as a release celebration, marking the group’s rise from Salvador’s streets to the world stage while keeping Bahia’s restless creativity at its core.
