Daily Discovery: Vinicius Surian – Baião do Fú

Vinicius Surian, a Brazilian multi-instrumentalist and luthier based in Cremona, Italy, showcases his latest work, “Baião do Fú,” from the album Quartet, released on the 6th of  December 2024. Recorded live in São Paulo in December 2022, the album highlights original compositions and reinterpretations of Brazilian classics by artists like João Donato and Milton Nascimento, fused with jazz and global influences. The quartet also features Gustavo Surian (percussion), Bruno Hernandes (drums), and Renato Leite (bass).

“Baião do Fú” draws from the northeastern Brazilian tradition, infusing it with a fresh, contemporary perspective. The composition balances the rhythmic foundations of baião with expansive jazz harmonies and spontaneous improvisation, creating a dynamic interplay between tradition and a more contemporary perspective.

Known for his versatility, Surian blends genres like samba, bossa nova, jazz, and reggae in his compositions. A veteran of São Paulo’s Theatro Municipal since age eight, he holds degrees in music performance and luthiery from EM&T and the Scuola Internazionale di Liuteria di Cremona. Surian is also a founding member of groups like Trio da Tica and Brazilian Jazz Trio.
