Daily Discovery: Trendafilka – Zaspalo e Chelebiche

Trendafilka, an 11-member vocal ensemble based in New Orleans, merges traditional Eastern European polyphonic singing with original and far-reaching musical elements. Their latest offering, “Zaspalo e Chelebiche,” exemplifies this blend by transforming a traditional Bulgarian work song into a soulful quartet arrangement. Featured on their recently released album For the Olives, this track highlights the ensemble’s skills at layering complex vocal harmonies.

Produced by Grammy-winner Misha Kachkachishvili, the album features a variety of seasonal and ceremonial songs from Bulgaria, Macedonia, other Eastern European countries, and the Caucasus, aiming to convey the cyclical nature of time and human emotion through music.

Founded in 2016, Trendafilka draws inspiration from the communal practice of choral singing and a dedication to cultural exploration. Named after the Balkan wild rose, the group preserves the rich traditions of polyphonic singing while adapting them for new audiences, ensuring these time-honoured repertoires remain vibrant and relevant.

The ensemble’s approach is rooted in collaboration, with each vocalist contributing equally to create a cohesive and textured sound. This egalitarian method highlights the group’s technical skill while enabling them to explore universal themes such as love, loss, and resilience.
