Daily Discovery: The Mbira Renaissance Band – Famba (feat. Brett Miles)

Canadian ensemble The Mbira Renaissance Band collaborates with saxophonist Brett Miles on “Famba,” a track that blends traditional Zimbabwean mbira music with elements of jazz and afro-fusion. Based in Edmonton, the ensemble is led by mbira players Ronald Nyanodoro and Chaka Zinyemba, and features a multi-generational line-up that includes marimba, guitar, percussions and hosho.

On “Famba,” which means “to go” in Shona, the group is joined by veteran Canadian saxophonist Brett Miles, whose phrasing adds a fluid, improvisational edge to the track’s cyclical structure. Also contributing are Munya Mataruse (backing vocals and congas), reinforcing the rhythmic backbone of a piece that balances heritage and contemporary approach.

Rooted in Zimbabwean spiritual traditions, but shaped by diasporic experience and collaborative musicianship, “Famba” captures the band’s wider project: reimagining mbira music within a global, improvisational framework.
