Daily Discovery: The Kingston Lions – Soul Shakedown Party (Bob Marley and The Wailers Cover)

The Kingston Lions present their reworking of “Soul Shakedown Party”, originally recorded by Bob Marley & The Wailers in 1970. The single features vocals from Karell Wisdom alongside contributions from some of the most renowned reggae session musicians, including Robbie Lyn, Boris Gardiner, Mikey “Boo” Richards, and UzziahStickyThompson.

The group was formed under the direction of the late Mikey Chung, whose career included collaborations with Lee “Scratch” Perry, Grace Jones, and The Rolling Stones. This project assembles legendary Jamaican session players who shaped the foundation of reggae, revisiting landmark songs from the 1960s and ’70s.

Their rendition of “Soul Shakedown Party” focuses on a solid rhythm foundation and vocals that honour the original without copying it. The track will appear on their self-titled debut album, scheduled for release on 15 August 2025 via Bulletproof Recording and Kartel Music Group.

The album includes reinterpretations of classics such as “Young, Gifted and Black”, “Armagideon Time”, and “Israelites”. It also features guest appearances by Nick Hexum (311) and Dave Wakeling (The Beat/General Public).

Following the deaths of Karell Wisdom, Mikey Chung, and Uzziah “Sticky” Thompson since the recordings were completed, this release serves as a lasting testament to their contributions to reggae music.
