Daily Discovery: The Budos Band – Overlander

The Budos Band return with “Overlander,” a heavy, hypnotic instrumental that leads the charge on their forthcoming album VII, out on the 30th of May via their new label, Diamond West. Driven by thick, fuzzed-out guitar riffs, steady percussion, and the group’s unmistakable horn section, the track pushes forward with weight and intention.

Now two decades into their run, the Staten Island ensemble continue to move freely between styles. VII draws on Turkish psych, Zamrock, and the gritty funk that’s always underpinned their sound, leaning less on nostalgia and more on feel and force.

Their first full-length since Long in the Tooth (2020), VII also marks the studio debut of percussionist Rich Tarrana (The Frightnrs), whose textures bring a fresh layer to the band’s dense, groove-driven arrangements. Recorded in California, the album doesn’t reinvent The Budos Band — it sharpens what’s already there.
