“Rub’a’Dub Love” is 8-bit digital reggae in the style of the 1980s, and it originally appeared on the album Where My Style Comes From, released in June. On 2 October it came back in two remixes on UK-based digital dub and reggae label Superchip: raggamuffin boom-bap from Hopebullet, a DJ and sound engineer from Osaka who also goes by Ranking Jin, and a second version by RJD.
Behind it are deejay Daddy Cookiz and producer Simma, with singer Ponchita Peligros as guest. Simma is Nathan Simm from Hull, England, a producer and DJ who started out in Ableton during the 2020 lockdown, runs Superchip and also records as Polyecho and Square Nath. His 2024 debut, Simma Enters The Game, mixed digital reggae, dubbed-out hip-hop and 8-bit chiptune and drew on the German label Jahtari and the Scottish sound system Mungo’s Hi Fi.
Daddy Cookiz has deejayed since 2005 and grew up on Jamaican sound system culture, and he takes his cues from Super Cat, Yellowman and Shabba Ranks. On the album he deejays in that rub-a-dub tradition over Simma’s digital sound, and Simma now takes that sound to Japan, where he performs with Hopebullet in Kyoto on 10 October, Tokyo on 19 October and Yokohama on 21 October, in a showcase for Superchip.
