Wilmington, North Carolina reggae group Signal Fire return with “You Never Know”, a reggae roots anthem grounded in resilience and collective spirit. Released more than a decade after the band’s formation, the single captures the group’s steady rise from the US East Coast reggae scene into a touring outfit recognised nationally.
Sung over a mid-tempo rhythm, the track layers Sean Gregory’s vocals with guitar, bass, keys, drums, and saxophone. The lyrics stress impermanence and action: “You never know, you never know / Which way the wind might blow / So you just got to get up and go.” Gregory casts music as a healing force against despair, while the chorus, repeated like a mantra, becomes a communal call carried by a sound system pulse.
Formed in 2013, Signal Fire have pursued an independent path through four albums, including Lift Up (2016), which reached number one on the iTunes reggae chart, and Wake Up (2019), which climbed to number eight on the Billboard reggae rankings. Their pandemic-era release Rhythm of Life stands as their most acclaimed work to date.
Known for their high-energy live shows, they have shared stages with Stephen Marley, UB40, SOJA, and Morgan Heritage, while collaborations have included Jesse Royal, Dean Fraser, and The Elovaters.
“You Never Know” underscores Signal Fire’s commitment to positive lyrical content and reggae rooted in community.
