Daily Discovery: Sexteto Tabala – Negra Santa (Atarrayo Remix)

“Negra Santa (No Llores)” is a remix that brings together two distinct but complementary voices in Colombian music: Atarrayo, an electronic producer from Barranquilla, and Sexteto Tabalá, one of the most respected traditional groups from San Basilio de Palenque. Released by Palenque Records, the track offers a thoughtful update of a song rooted in Afro-Colombian spirituality and community memory.

Sexteto Tabalá’s version of “Negra Santa” is built on traditional bullerengue rhythms and the vocal interplay typical of Palenquero music. The lyrics, centred on a “black saint” figure, evoke a blend of reverence, grief and strength—common themes in Afro-Colombian oral traditions. Atarrayo’s remix doesn’t obscure these elements, but rather enhances them with restrained electronic production: deep basslines, ambient textures and minimal percussive loops that give the track a steady, meditative energy.

The result is a subtle but effective fusion that keeps the original’s character intact while inviting new listeners in. It’s a respectful adaptation that highlights the emotional and rhythmic depth of the source material.

The accompanying video, released in late May, reflects this balance visually. It draws on natural settings and ritual gestures, connecting the music to its cultural and geographic roots while giving it a contemporary feel.

“Negra Santa” is a clear example of how traditional music can be extended through careful, considered production—bridging generations without losing its sense of place.
