Daily Discovery: Rakino Quartet – I Could Go Again If You’re Up For It

“I Could Go Again If You’re Up For It” signals Rakino Quartet’s latest move, released this November as they continue developing material shaped by jazz, afrobeat and trip-hop.

New Zealand trumpeter and cornet player Andy Watts, now based in London, leads the quartet with Mike De Souza on guitar, Michael Searl on bass and Filippo Galli on drums.

Watts grew up in a classical household in New Zealand before moving into jazz, dub and afrobeat with dDub and The Hot Grits. His move to London brought more than ten years with London Afrobeat Collective and ongoing work with Dele Sosimi, grounding his understanding of afrobeat and strengthening his focus on improvisation.

Compositions developed during the pandemic formed the basis of The Way Back From Here in 2024, introduced at the Vortex Jazz Club and followed by UK shows. The quartet continued performing while preparing further European dates and releasing a run of singles across 2025.

“I Could Go Again If You’re Up For It” follows that path through jazz phrasing, afrobeat rhythm writing and trip-hop-related textures, positioned ahead of their second album Backwards Into The Beyond, planned for early 2026.
